Introduction to Probability and Statistics
Background: Ideas about probability and statistics are more misunderstood than understood. The objective of this course is to clear the air, and, hopefully, even persuade its participants to fall in love with these subjects. Statistics has become an essential tool in life science which is becoming increasingly quantitative and computational. Analysis of biological information poses challenging statistical problems due to size, complexity and intricate interrelationships. Researchers and professionals in life sciences will encounter analytical concepts and formulations more and more in the years to come. It’s time to get better acquainted with probability and statistics.
Participants: This course is intended for those working in the broad area of bioinformatics and biostatistics in academia and industry.
Course Outline: The course covers,
Measures of central tendency and dispersion | covariance and correlation.
Probability fundamentals | conditional probability and independence | Bayer’s theorem | Markov Chains |Introduction to HMM.
Testing of hypotheses | power of a test | meaning of p-value
Multivariate analysis including principal component analysis |factor analysis
Clinical trials | Multiple regression
Discussion and presentation of case studies.
The course will involve the solution of at least 100 problems, some of them involving the use of a statistical analysis software like SYSTAT.
