Internship Positions

Last date to apply 25th September 2010

Thanks for interest. A few internship positions are open at IBAB and in Shodhaka Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd., (a company being incubated inside IBAB). The project supervisor will be Dr. Kshitish  Acharya for all the projects currently open, both at IBAB and 'Shodhaka'.

Purpose of internships, and who should apply? Please note that the internships in the areas of our research can help in understanding of the research process, enhancing the knowledge in the specific domains, developing certain skills and, most importantly, allow you to handle a well-defined project from beginning to end. The last component is the most important part of the internship. Successful completion of the projects and associated knowledge growth has helped many students to find good positions after completion of the projects in our group. Nevertheless, many students, focus too much only on very superficial fancy terms (e.g., drug discovery, genetic engineering) and experimental bio-techniques. If you also have such opinions, please do NOT apply. Only the students with genuine interest in science, and willing to work hard and commit for a minimum of six months are requested to apply.   - Dr. Kshitish Acharya

Also please note that neither can we pay stipend to internship students, nor the students are expected to pay any fees for internship, if selected.

PROJECT DETAILS:
A. Biology projects
ELIGIBILITY: performing or completed graduation/post-graduation in any life
science subjects including biotechnology, bioinformatics, biochemistry

(experience in molecular biology experiments required for the last project in this                       section).
POSITIONS:  Multiple positions may be available for each projects.
IBAB-project 1. Mammalian gene expression data extraction from literature and databases, analysis and/or verification (involves extensive biocuration). This has been a standard process using which we have been developing new gene expression platforms. The project involves extensive collection and reading of scientific publications, familiarization of microarray data processing, experimental procedures, and data analysis, formatting the data, validation of data already collected, etc.
IBAB- project 2. Analysis of mammalian gene-clusters at various levels: alternative splice form prediction, promoter sequence analysis, protein-protein interaction studies, involvement in standard pathways etc. The gene-clusters derived from some of the already developed gene expression platforms would form the most reliable expression-based groups of genes. We intend to use them for a complete bioinformatics analysis.
Shodhaka-projects 1, 2 & 3. Systematic comparative analysis of bioinformatics resources using scientific case studies. Shodhaka intends to be the world leader in the area of application of online resources for genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics, and welcomes you to join the efforts.

IBAB-Shodhaka project on alternative splicing. Characterizing alternative splice forms in mammalian testis using cloning and real time PCR experiments. The project will involve partly wet-lab and partly dry-lab work (IBAB-Shodhaka collaborative project - click here for details).

B. Biostatistics and programming project (at Shodhaka)
ELIGIBILITY: performing or completed graduation/post-graduation in bioinformatics
or computational subjects + thorough knowledge and abilities in statistics and
           mathematics
POSITIONS:  1 position available for this project.

B. Programming-based projects
Multiple project options are available both at IBAB and Shodhaka.
ELIGIBILITY: performing or completed graduation/post-graduation in bioinformatics
           or computational subjects
POSITIONS:  Multiple positions may be available for each project.

PROCESS OF APPLICATION:

  1. First round of short-listing applicants is done by written test. Interviews will be conducted (at IBAB), at a later stage

Earlier IBAB had conducted tests in its premises. But, since last year we have       launched an online test system (from Shodhaka) for the first round screening.
This would save time, effort and money for applicants. In fact, where possible we     would like to conduct telephonic interviews in the second round as well.

  1. Prepare a DD or check of Rs.500/- (application processing fee, payable to 'SHODHAKA LIFE SCIENCES PVT. LTD.')
  2. Note the DD/check details (bank name, branch, date, DD no. etc) OR scan it, and send it along with your CV, and application form, to: shodhaka@ibab.ac.in .
  3. Download the application form and email to shodhaka@ibab.ac.in. Click here to download the form.
