BIOZING'05

BioZing, an annual event of Pracint, the students' entrepreneurship cell of IBAB was held on 23 April 2005 at 3:30pm at the B2B Pavillion, Palace Grounds, Bangalore.

The guests for the programme were

Ms. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, MD & CEO, Biocon India, Mr. Suhas Gopinath, CEO, Globals Inc, Mr. Anurag Jain, a doctoral student at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), Mr. Ashwini Mathur, GSK India, Dr. Ashwin Naik, President, Vaatsalya Healthcare Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Dr. Mugasimangalam C. Raja, President & CEO, Genotypic Technology and Mr. Chris Thomas, CIO and Vice President (Strategy and Marketing) of Globals Inc.

The event started with the lighting of the lamp and the welcome address by Mr. Suhas Gopinath. At the age of 17, he was recognized by the BBC as the World's Youngest CEO in 2003. He spoke about his childhood days and how the entrepreneurship feel has driven him to start his first webportal coolhindustan.com. He shares his experience that a young aspiring entrepreneur should focus on self confidence, forecasting his vision, consistent interaction with team members and crisis management.

The next speaker for the event was Ms. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, who with her usual captivating speech said that she considers BioZing as a very very important event at Bangalore Bio each year. She emphasized that student's should not be be dissapointed if they cannot find jobs but to create the jobs for themselves. Her speech focussed mainly on how to develop the entrepreneurial skill sets in the area of Biotechnology. In the end she concluded stating that the difference must lie in our DNA to innovate things different and better.

Mr. Anurag Jain touched upon the topics of Need-based entrepreneurship and Opportunity-based entrepreneurship, the Traits vs Behaviour approaches of looking at entrepreneurship and Critical factors for entrepreneurship with an emphasis on people and financing. He stated that students who want to embark on a new career of entrepreneurship should start ahead with effective networking rightaway.

The event then came to the other programmes for the day: Bio-Quix, Business Idea, The CEO Challenge and Corporate Treasure Hunt.

Bio- Quix: A quiz program powered by an audio visual round. There were 4 groups of 2 members each. The questions were based on industry trends in the field of Biotechnology. Students from prominent colleges from Bangalore and other neighbouring states participated.

Business Idea: The participants were asked to submit their business ideas with information related to what types of area would they concentrate on in the field of Biotechnology? Idea proposition, Target market, Acquring first funds and managing them, operational management and revenue generation.

The CEO's were put to test which gave an insight about how the thin-slicing business mind works? They were provided with imaginary funds of Rs. 25 lakhs and was asked to select any field for starting their respective businesses. Then each were given different crisis situation and were asked to tackle it. It provided an indepth knowledge to the audience as to how a successful entrepreneur would face difficult situations.

Corporate Treasure Hunt: The participants were provided with a questionnaire for which they could get the answers only by visiting the concerned stall at Bangalore Bio on whose organisation the question was based. Applications were pouring in until the event started. There was good response and the audience belonged to different age groups.The venue was jam-packed with an audience, 200-250 in number, comprising of young students, faculty and others who were interested in entrepreneurship. The Prizes were distributed to the winners of the various programs by Prof. N. Yathindra, Director, IBAB. The Prizes included cash prizes upto Rs. 10000/- , certificates and Pracint Mementoes.
