The mandate of the institute is to catalyze the growth of the biotech industry through education, research and entrepreneurship programs. Currently the education programs of the institute include an inter-disciplinary masters’ and a PhD programme. The institute has a wonderful placement record of its masters’ students, both in industry and in academia, including internationally.
The institute has an excellent research infrastructure including sophisticated laboratories and equipment suitable for cutting edge research. The faculty of the institute are engaged in high quality research in areas such as genomics and synthetic biology. They have received funding from various sources and have an excellent publication record. The institute has an incubation program for startup companies, and has incubated over 25 companies so far. Some of these companies have already been successful in the market place and several of them have won prestigious awards.
IBAB is located in a beautiful campus which is a part of an 80-acre biotech park, the Bangalore Helix. The institute is co-located in this campus along with the Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC), an excellently-equipped incubation centre that is incubating about 30 young life science start-ups, and the Centre for Human Genetics.
