Introduction~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

With the growing need for laboratory trained professionals in the Biotech sector industry it has become necessary to have personnel with reliable technical expertise to handle equipment and conduct experiments. Keeping these in mind the postgraduate diploma in Biotechniques, an intense laboratory course that trains life science students and professionals in wet-lab techniques has been developed.

3. Excellent teaching: IBAB faculty / Guest talks

There has been tremendous response from the industry by employing the trained students. Almost all of the students from the last 3 batches are placed. About 80% have been placed in the industry and the remaining students are pursuing higher studies. About 90% of the current batch students are placed well before the course-completion.

The curriculum of the course is designed to:

  • To train life science students and professionals in laboratory techniques. The techniques include extraction and purification of bio-molecules (DNA, RNA and proteins), electrophoresis, PCR, blotting, recombinant DNA technology, cell culture etc (also see syllabus).
  • To enhance related professional skills in the students. This includes training in basic computer usage, verbal and written presentations, record keeping, safety and maintenance aspects, group discussions, literature search, bioinformatics and statistical methods.
  • To increase the dependability of the participant. This is done by
    • analysis of variation in experimental results and the probable causes,
    • creating awareness about variations and pitfalls in basic procedures,
    • exercises of trouble shooting during experiments and
    • promote self-learning through assignments amidst a busy schedule of practical and routine tests. After brief initial phase of demonstrations and guidance, the students would perform the experiments entirely on their own once the protocol is given.
  • Promoting group work and team spirit in the students. Several assignments and experimental designs encourage (even force) students to interact and co-operate with each other during the course.
  • To increase the competence of the students through small research projects towards the end of the course.
