The TNQ Distinguished Lecture in the Life Sciences 2020, which had Nobel Laureate Dr. Venki Ramakrishnan as the speaker and guest-of-honour, was one that echoed the novelty of its predecessors. Speaking to a rapt audience at the J.N. Tata Auditorium, IISc, Bengaluru on Jan 18, 2020, Dr. Ramakrishnan shared his scientific journey through the "Adventures in the ribosome".

From his decision to working on the 30S subunit of the ribosome to the role of release factors in translation mechanism, the talk highlighted the importance of the ribosome and its key role in controlling life. The format of the lecture was such that the attendees, including IBAB students, project assistants, and research scholars, clearly understood the vision and ideals with which Dr. Ramakrishnan and his team cracked the mystery of the ribosome.

Dr. Venki also shared several light-hearted moments that he encountered in his "adventure" and encouraged the students to focus on a specific scientific question that interested them, rather than a broad field such as structural biochemistry. The event concluded with the distribution of the Inspiring Science Award 2020 for upcoming scientists in India and some mouthwatering refreshments. Overall, It was a wonderful experience for the attendees from IBAB, who look forward all the more towards next year's iteration of the TNQ Distinguished Lecture series in the Life Sciences.

A farewell note to the graduating class.

For most people, the lockdowns in the last few months have been something new. But I had a dry run last year, when I was at home for 3 months, generally in a wheelchair. It wasn’t so bad. We spend most of our time sitting anyway, so how does it matter if the chair has wheels? Yes, things are a little more clumsy and time-consuming.. Read more
