The unique dual specialization MSc degree programme incorporates genetic engineering, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, fermentation, and downstream processing omics, next gen sequencing, big data analysis and so on in the course of study.

Practical hands-on training in biotechnology (including PCR, cell and molecular biology, protein chemistry etc.) and bioinformatics (statistics, C, C++, PERL, JAVA, and R etc.) brings the learning experience closer to industry practices. Courses are taught by excellent faculty from industry and academia. The coursework also includes a research project as part of the curriculum. Please see the syllabus for further details.

  1. Students with a Bachelor’s Degree in any branch of Science/Technology/Medicine (with degrees such as B.Sc., B.E, B.Tech., B.Pharm., BAgri, MBBS, BDS and BVSc).
  2. Illustrative eligible subject areas are: Life sciences (zoology, botany, genetics, human biology, general life sciences, ecology, environmental biology), bioinformatics, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, any branch of engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, agriculture, medicine, dentistry, horticulture, forestry and veterinary sciences.
  3. A student should have obtained an aggregate score of at least 50% in his/her Bachelor’s degree.
  4. Students in the final semester of their Bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria and submitting the original documents before the last date as announced by the institute.

  7. Indian nationals, NRIs and foreign nationals who have passed the qualifying degree examination outside of India, must submit the Equivalence Certificate issued by the Association of Indian Universities along with their application.

(ii) Entrance examination:

Applicants will be short listed based on a proctored online examination. The details will be intimated later.

The entrance test to the MSc in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (2023–2025) will cover the subjects physics, mathematics, chemistry, and the life sciences. The details of the syllabus and pattern will be updated on the web page.

Any change in the examination pattern will be intimated to the applicants.

(iii) Admission interview:

The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed either in person at IBAB, or in online mode. Candidates will be intimated in due course about the date and mode of interview.

(iv) Admission score:

  • The entrance examination is a qualifier for the interview.
  • The Admission Score is based on the performance in the interview and the candidate’s earlier academic performance.
  • The admission ranking will be based (a) 70% on the interview score and (b) 30% on the overall academic score in the 10th standard, 12th standard and the Bachelor’s Degree.

Please note the pattern and other details of the final entrance examination:

  • The examination will be for a duration of 2 hours.
  • There will be 100 multiple choice questions.
  • The test paper will have four sections : Mathematics and logical reasoning (30 Qs), Physics (15 Qs), Chemistry (15 Qs) and Biology (40 Qs).
  • Each question will have 4 choices, of which one is correct.
  • Each correct answer carries +2 marks, and a wrong answer carries -0.5 mark
  • The syllabus will be generally of Class 12 level.

Selected candidates will receive an offer letter, with detailed instructions regarding the fee payment schedule. These candidates will have to confirm their admission by paying a security deposit as listed below. This security deposit is refundable only on successful completion of the entire programme.

Students will have to submit their original documents at the time of admission. All admissions will be provisional, subject to submission and verification of original documents at the time of admission and approval by Bangalore University.

Set of documents to be provided at the time of admission:

  1. Original  marks cards (10th class/12th class/ under-graduation)
  2. Migration certificate: You must apply to your college for a migration certificate immediately after completion of the degree course.
  3. A few other documents may be required, which will be intimated to selected candidates.


  • Admission is liable to be cancelled if any fraudulent records are found even after securing admission. Any fees paid already will not be refunded.
  • The merit list for admissions will be prepared separately for each MSc program based on the only or first choice (if applied for both the programs) of the students. Second choice of the students, in case applied for both the programs, will be considered only if seats are vacant in either program.
