The general objective of the M.Sc. programme inBig Data Biology’ will be to introduce students to, and train them in, the highly interdisciplinary areas at the interface of biology, mathematics, computing, data science and information technology. The students trained through this programme will help address the need for highly skilled manpower in this area and produce a new generation of computational biologists capable of exploring genomic information in medicine, analysing medical images using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and employing these techniques in diverse areas such as healthcare diagnostics and therapy.

Upon the completion of their M.Sc. degree, students should have acquired the following:

  • Foundational knowledge and skills in various domains of biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, genomics and next generation sequencing, computer programming, artificial intelligence and machine learning and clinical trial data analysis
  • Skills and knowledge that will enable them to explore careers in relevant academic or industry domains
  • Ability and skills to design models and analyse large biological data sets such as in genomics and medical imaging
  • Research acumen and analytical thinking to carry out research in this area, and self-learning
  • Skills to communicate and present scientific results to diverse audiences
ELIGIBILITY
  1. Students with a Bachelor’s Degree in any branch of Science/Technology/Medicine (with degrees such as B.Sc., B.E, B.Tech., B.Pharm., BAgri, MBBS, BDS and BVSc).
  2. Illustrative eligible subject areas are: Life sciences (zoology, botany, genetics, human biology, general life sciences, ecology, environmental biology), bioinformatics, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, any branch of engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, agriculture, medicine, dentistry, horticulture, forestry and veterinary sciences.
  3. A student should have obtained an aggregate score of at least 50% in his/her Bachelor’s degree.
  4. Students in the final semester of their Bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria and submitting the original documents before the last date as announced by the institute.
  5. If a student has a backlog, and does not declare it during the admissions, then his/her admission will be cancelled.
  6. Applicants who have had a break in their education or have been working for a few years are also eligible.

  8. Indian nationals, NRIs and foreign nationals who have passed the qualifying degree examination outside of India, must submit the Equivalence Certificate issued by the Association of Indian Universities along with their application.
ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE

The institute reserves the right to change the admission procedure, including the exam dates, the pattern, the duration and the syllabus of the examination.

(i) Apply online :

Applicants need to fill up an online application form by paying the following fees:
For students from India : Rs. 700/- (whether applying for one or both MSc programmes)
For NRI/Foreign students: Rs. 1400/- (whether applying for one or both MSc programmes)

(ii) Entrance examination:

  • Applicants will be short listed based on a proctored online examination. The details will be intimated later.
  • The entrance test to the MSc programme will cover the subjects physics, mathematics, chemistry, and the life sciences. The details of the syllabus and pattern will be updated on the web page.

Any change in the examination pattern will be intimated to the applicants.

(iii) Admission interview:

The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed either in person at IBAB, or in online mode. Candidates will be intimated in due course about the date and mode of interview.

(iv) Admission score:

  • The entrance examination is a qualifier for the interview.
  • The Admission Score is based on the performance in the interview and the candidate’s earlier academic performance.
  • The admission ranking will be based (a) 70% on the interview score and (b) 30% on the overall academic score in the 10th standard, 12th standard and the Bachelor’s Degree.
PATTERN OF ENTRANCE EXAM

Please note the pattern and other details of the final entrance examination:

  • The examination will be for a duration of 2 hours.
  • There will be 100 multiple choice questions.
  • The test paper will have four sections : Mathematics and logical reasoning (30 Qs), Physics (15 Qs), Chemistry (15 Qs) and Biology (40 Qs).
  • Each question will have 4 choices, of which one is correct.
  • Each correct answer carries +2 (plus two) marks, and a wrong answer carries -1.0 (minus one) mark.
  • The syllabus of the entrance examination comprises physics, chemistry, maths, biology and logical reasoning. Questions in physics, chemistry and maths will be at the level of the class XII syllabus. Questions in biology will be at the level of undergraduate biology programmes.
CONFIRMATION OF ADMISSION

Selected candidates will receive an offer letter, with detailed instructions regarding the fee payment schedule. These candidates will have to confirm their admission by paying a security deposit as listed below. This security deposit is refundable only on successful completion of the course.

Students will have to submit their original documents at the time of admission. All admissions will be provisional, subject to submission and verification of original documents at the time of admission and approval by Bangalore University.

Set of documents to be provided at the time of admission:

  1. Original  marks cards (10th class/12th class/ under-graduation)
  2. Provisional or official degree certificate
  3. Migration and Transfer certificate: You must apply to your college for a migration and transfer certificate immediately after completion of the degree course.
  4. A few other documents may be required, which will be intimated to selected candidates.

Note:

  • Admission is liable to be cancelled if any fraudulent records are found even after securing admission. Any fees paid already will not be refunded.
  • The merit list for admissions will be prepared separately for each MSc program based on the only or first choice (if applied for both the programs) of the students. Second choice of the students, in case applied for both the programs, will be considered only if seats are vacant in either program.
  • Every student who is admitted needs to produce his/her (a) UG marks’ sheets (all of them), (b) Provisional/official degree certificate, (c) Migration certificate and (d) Transfer certificate by 15 October 2024. Failure to do so will lead to cancellation of the admission.
