Prof. B. Gopal

Distinguished Professor and AstraZeneca Visiting Chair

Prof. B. Gopal is a Distinguished Professor and AstraZeneca Visiting Chair at IBAB, and a senior Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru since 2003. He has extensive research experience in the areas of Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics. After a Masters Degree in Physics from IIT-Kanpur, he received his PhD from IISc and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at National Institute of Medical Research, London and the University of Chicago, USA.

​He employs structural and synthetic biology approaches to understand microbes. The molecules that he works on are involved in inter-cell communication, transcriptional regulation and mediate phenotypic switching. These studies involve a combination of molecular biology techniques, biophysical and biochemical analysis and crystallography/imaging and computational biology.

In recognition, he has won several national awards like the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize from CSIR, National Bioscience Award for Career Development from DBT, International Senior Research Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust, UK, CDRI Award, Tata Transformation Prize among others.  He is an elected Fellow of all three national science academies in India.
