Prof. MRN Murthy

Distinguished Professor and AstraZeneca Chair

Prof. MRN Murthy, the renowned crystallographer of India, has joined IBAB as the Distinguished Professor and AstraZeneca Chair. Prof. Murthy completed his Master’s degree in physics from IIT Madras and subsequently did his Ph.D in crystallography under the guidance of Prof. K. Venkatesan at the Indian Institute of Science. He did his post-doctoral work with one of the pioneers of structural biology, Prof. M.G. Rossmann of Purdue University, Indiana, USA. He later joined as a faculty member at the Molecular Biophysics Unit at the Indian Institute of Science where he served until his retirement. During this period, he was one of the key persons in developing crystallography in India. For a long time he was the only crystallographer working on viral proteins in India. He has contributed about 100 protein crystal structures to the protein data bank and has authored as many papers in internationally peer reviewed journals.
